About this Triumph TR4
DEPOSIT TAKEN: 19/04/2022
The Triumph TR4 was launched by the Triumph Motor Company in August 1961 and the body of the new car was designed by Giovanni Michelotti. It caused some controversy upon its release as it replaced the previous rounded shapes of the TR2/3 for a much squarer look, but the TR4’s looks have aged very gracefully, with details like the headlamps set inboard of the wings giving it a distinctive face. An added benefit of the new body and doors in particular, were wind-up/down door windows could be fitted – a big improvement over its predecessor's rather flimsy side screens. Inside, the dashboard looks charming, and was one of the first production cars to include adjustable air vents on the fascia.
Mechanically, it shared much with the earlier Triumph TR2/3 models, but the new major upgrade was the Engine displacement which was increased from 1991cc to 2138cc, although the 1991cc engine was initially available as a no-cost option for those customers who wanted to race their cars in the under 2.0 Litre classes of the day.
Production of the TR4 ended in January 1965 with the introduction of the TR4A and 40,253 examples were built during its 5-year production run of which 2,592 were RHD cars were for the UK market and 37,661 were built for the Export Market of which the vast majority (LHD) went to the USA where Triumph sports cars were highly coveted. The TR4 was also very successful in motor sport around the world, particularly in the USA where In 1961 it won first in class and thirtieth overall at Sebring.
According to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust production certificate, this Triumph TR4 was built in Coventry on 9th March 1962 and was sold by Triumph dealer Ernest W Hatfield Ltd in Sheffield to a Mr Alf Williams in Rotherham and was first registered on 4th May 1962 with the number plate 273 CWE. Mr Williams kept the car for 17 years before selling it to the next owner in Ashford in Kent in 1979 and he kept the car for 19 years before selling it in 1998. The current number plate DSL 929 was put on the car in August 1999 when the 3rd owner decided to keep the original plate!
The car has had a further 6 owners since then, with the current owner having purchased the car in March 2018 from TRGB in Huntingdon.
The car has had a fortune spent on it over the years and there are invoices for works and restoration in the file dating back to the second owner and over £12,500 by the current owner. In March 2018 it had a reconditioned Gearbox and Overdrive fitted by TRGB and in November 2018 it had a fully rebuilt 'unleaded' Engine plus ancillary works carried out by Crown Classic Cars in Twickenham totalling £9,540 with the mileage at 96,253 miles and it has only covered a further 1,563 miles on the rebuilt engine and a believed genuine 97,816 miles from new!
