About this Triumph Stag
DEPOSIT TAKEN - 02/09/2022
Designed as a luxury sports car, the Triumph Stag was designed to compete directly with the new Mercedes R107 Series SL Sports. All Stags were four-seater Convertibles but for structural rigidity – and to meet proposed American rollover standards of the time – the Stag required a Roll-Bar connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. The Triumph Stag was styled by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti and was launched in June 1970 to a warm welcome at the various international Motor Shows.
Sales started very briskly and the Stag opened up new markets for British Leyland. Although well served with both Triumph and MG sports cars at the time, the Triumph Stag was something else again, a real Grand Tourer with so much promise! Its Triumph 2997cc V8 engine produced 145bhp and it would accelerate to 60mph in 11.6 seconds with a top speed of around 115mph, not as quick as the Mercedes SL, but fast enough in its day.
Essentially, the Stag created a market niche and although it was phased out in 1977 after a production run of 25,877 cars, it is still viewed today as the quintessential British classic sports car with a development story which is a tragic missed opportunity. It had everything going for it, but it died after a relatively short production run and drove many of its first owners to distraction. The Stag was BL’s nearly car – it nearly had the armoury to take over the world, had it not been for that fragile engine and we wonder how different things would have been had the Rover V8 been fitted from day one! Thankfully, those early mechanical issues have all been addressed and the vast majority of Triumph Stag's now on the road are reliable Grand Tourers that can be driven regularly and can whisk 4 adults around in relative comfort. The exhaust sound from this V8 Engine is simply wonderful and pretty unique!
This beautifully restored Triumph Stag MKII - Chassis No: LD434200 and Engine No: LF43468HE is a 'matching numbers' car and was first registered on 1st September 1977 and is finished in a beautiful British Racing Green Metallic with a complete new Black Vinyl interior, new Green Mohair Roof, Black carpets, Electric Windows, a new Retro Le Beach DAB/Bluetooth Stereo, its original and rebuilt 3.0 V8 Engine, 4 Speed Manual Gearbox with Overdrive on 3rd & 4th Gears, Power Assisted Steering, Stainless Steel Exhaust and new Chrome Wire Wheels in place of its original alloy wheels.
The body and paint restoration of this car began in approximately 2011 when the previous owner bought the car and this was not completed until early 2017 and almost everything on the car has either been replaced or reconditioned. After the paint, it had a complete new Black Vinyl interior trim kit including hood cover and Roll-Bar trims, a new carpets set and a new Green Mohair Soft Top, new Seat Belts including rear Seat Belts and all fitted by Aldridge Trimming in June 2016 at a cost of £4,858.50. Its original Triumph 3.0 V8 Engine was rebuilt by the renowned Stag specialist Tony Hart of Hart Racing Services in conjunction with Triumph specialist Enginuity in London and works included a total strip and rebuild of the Engine with modified Cylinder Heads, Timing Chains, Tubular Exhaust Manifolds, a new Clutch and Clutch hydraulics, its 4 Speed Manual Gearbox with Overdrive were reconditioned, a full Braking system overhaul including hydraulics, pipes and reconditioned Calipers, uprated ignition system and Distributor, new Windscreen with green Tint + all new rubbers, door rubbers, chrome trims, polyurethane Suspension bushes, LED dashboard lights and much much more which is too long to list and all coming to a total of £9,005. The mileage on the speedometer after these works were completed was 18,120.
The current owner bought the car in September 2017 for £24,500 from the previous owner and during his 5 years of ownership he has spent a further £14,000 with Enginuity on various works and upgrades and all invoices for the restoration and mechanical rebuild are in the history file along with all the invoices for works carried out during his ownership. The mileage on the speedometer is now 20,968, so the car has only covered 2,848 miles since the rebuild.
This is without doubt one of the nicest Triumph Stag's we have had in for sale for a while and there really is nothing to do to it apart from driving and enjoying it. It does come with some old MOT certificates + a Triumph wallet and Handbook, a memory stick containing photo's of the body restoration, two sets of keys and it is clear on all HPi registers.
Upon sale it will receive a pre-sales service and a new MOT (although now exempt) and it will come with our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
