About this Mercedes-Benz 170 S
The Mercedes-Benz W136 170V made its public debut in February 1936. During the war the plant suffered very severe bomb damage but nevertheless emerged with a significant advantage over many of its pre-war competitors as enough of the W136's tooling survived or could be recreated for it to serve as the foundation upon which the company could rebuild.
By 1947 the model 170V had resumed its place as Mercedes-Benz top-seller but with the introduction of the 170S W136, in 1949, this was the first real Mercedes Benz luxury/executive car after WWII and was important for the company's survival. It was more luxurious, costlier and slightly larger than the 170V, distinctions the company made an effort to emphasise.
For a brief period of time, between 1949 and 1951 it offered two Convertible options - A and B. These were almost entirely hand assembled cars and only 1,603 cars of the four-seater Convertible B model were hand made and at 12,850 Deutschmarks, it was not a cheap car, but it has now turned it into an extremely sought after car by collectors and enthusiasts.
This stunning example - Chassis No: W13604304514/51 was built on 20th April 1951 and was first registered to its first owner in Berlin on 5th May 1951. The car had 3 German owners before being purchased by MI6 in Berlin and registered to MI6 agent Howard Greville in Charlottenburg in Berlin on 7th February 1955. It was used by MI6 agent Greville during one of the most interesting periods of the Cold War in the 1950’s and he worked with George Blake the Russian spy and the car was registered at the same address as Blake during its time in Berlin.
It came back to the UK in April 1956 and was registered here with the current number plate SXC 29 whilst still being owned by MI6 and the recorded mileage at this time was 88,000 Kilometers. but nothing is known of what happened to the car after this. It had certainly been lying in decay for decades when it was purchased by Kenneth & Mylva Foat in August 1972 and they commenced a complete restoration of the car to Concours d'Elegance condition and there are many photographs of the restoration in the history file.
The car has since won several awards and was also on display at Mercedes-Benz World for a number of years and featured in the film of the history of Mercedes Benz.
This superb ex-concours and award-winning Mercedes-Benz 170S Cabriolet B is presented in two-tone blue with light grey leather interior with a Beige Mohair Hood, beautiful interior and its original 4 Cylinder 1767cc Engine and has covered a believed genuine 89,848 Kilometers from new and it remains in beautiful condition.
