Background
Announced in April 1972, the AM V8 is an extensively modified version of the DBS V8 which was announced in September 1969. Externally, the grill was entirely new, no longer sweeping across the complete front but now tailored between the head lamps reminiscent of the earlier six cylinder models such as the DB3S. The engine, was by then the well tried and tested all alloy V8 designed by Tadek Marek that had made it’s first appearance in January 1967 at the Racing Car Show in London and raced by Lola in their Type 70 Mk III GT.
The AM V8 series III was introduced in London, August 1973. The important mechanical difference was the replacement of the Bosch fuel injection system by four twin-choke down draught Weber carburettors, which produced a notably smother performance at low engine speeds with greater flexibility.
To accommodate the carburettors, the bonnet bulge had to be deepened slightly and it was continued as a low bulge, to the trailing edge. Improvements were also made to water, oil and automatic transmission cooling and a new insulation material was used for the engine bulkhead and under the bonnet.
There are detailed improvements inside the car, revised front seats; passenger’s door locked, electrically, from driver’s side; revised switches and heating controls: fuses below the glove compartment; larger ashtray; fuel tank redesigned to increase luggage space. The Autocar road test (September 6th 1973) of a car with automatic transmission, gave 0 to 60 m.p.h. in 6.2 seconds and a maximum 146 mph.
Vehicle History
Originally registered in the name of the original supplying dealer, this car has had just three previous owners – first of those owners was Michael Daws of Beeston in Nottinghamshire, the second owner was a Mr Stewart Clarke from Birmingham who acquired the car through Aston Martin specialists, Robin Hamilton when the car had covered a total of 51,000 miles in February 1980.
In 36 years of ownership, this engineer owner maintained and improved the car – standard service work is noted in the Service History but between 1989 and 1994, the car was taken off the road for a complete back to metal respray and the colour was changed from its original Black to the beautiful British Racing Green Metallic. All Windows, doors, bonnet and boot were removed and stripped, the outer sills and inner box sections cut out and replaced as necessary. Box sections were waxoyled, new aluminium cut into wing and door bottoms, door locks were replaced and boot and fuel flap operation converted to electric operation.
In 1997, the automatic transmission was taken to ATP for specialist rebuild, in 2000, it was the turn of the front suspension to be rebuilt and alongside upgrades to the electronic ignition and the wheels changed to later BBS models, the owner has changed oil and filters regularly throughout his ownership.
The car was purchased by the current owner in March 2016 with 91,746 miles on the speedometer and during his 5 years of ownership he has spent just over £21,000 on the car with works including new Air Conditioning Condensers, full Brake overhaul, new Engine Mountings, Rear Suspension, re-conditioned power Steering Rack and Pump, recent Paint and Bodywork repairs and 5 new 235/60R 15 Pirelli P600 Tyres. The car has now covered 93,143 miles from new and its original and refurbished Alloy Wheels are available with the car.
Summary
Aston Martin V8’s continue to excite enthusiasts and investors alike – with its “flip tail” and Vantage air dam, this is a car with thoughtful care through its refurbishment and with a wonderful ownership history and a comprehensive typed record of servicing over its lifetime. It has two folders full of invoices, old MOT Certificates and MOT history, registration history and a new HPi check confirming that the car is clear on all registers.
It was featured as front page star for both Classic Car magazine and Auto Express back in 2011 due to its striking condition and appearance with the 'Vantage' front spoiler and 'Flip Tail', but the beauty is far more than skin-deep!
With its striking good looks, this is an exceptional example of an ever popular model which has been priced very sensibly and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package including a new MOT (although exempt), pre sales Service, HPI/provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, South West London.
