About this Alfa Romeo Spider
In 1966 Alfa Romeo introduced the 'Round Tail' successor to the Giulia Spider which was simply called the Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider (105.03). There was a competition to decide the name of the new car and although the winning entry was 'Duetto', they faced a number of trademark issues and consequently it was never officially called Duetto, although it is always commonly referred to as this and only 6,324 examples of the Spider 1600 were produced between 1966 and 1967.
In 1967 modified versions of the 'Round Tail' Spider 1600 appeared such as the the lower priced Spider 1300 Junior and 1750 Spider Veloce which were both built between 1967 and 1969 when they were replaced with the new Kamm Tail models.
According to the Alfa Romeo Museum, this beautifully restored LHD Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 “Duetto” (105.03) VIN No: AR665377 and Engine No: AR0053617448 was manufactured on the 22nd June 1967 and sold on the 23rd November 1967 to Alfa Romeo Inc. in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Nothing is known of its history in the USA, but it remained there until it was sold and exported to Spain where it was first registered as a Vehiculo Historico in Barcelona on 23rd June 2005.
Since 2005 it had been maintained by Alfa Romeo specialist Auto Storica in Barcelona (https://www.auto-storica.com/) for its first owner and they bought the car from him in 2015 and sold the car to the last Spanish owner in Barcelona in March 2016. The following restoration works were agreed and carried out by them before he bought the car:
Carburettors - overhauled, new spark plugs, oil change, new oil filter, new air filter, new battery, new dynamo, adjustment of doors, windows and bodywork elements, repaint of car complete, new mohair hood , new hood mechanism/frame, new carpets, reconnolising of front seats and other new upholstery, new sump pan gasket and engine seals, front suspension - Bush kit , valve cover gasket, head manifold exhaust gasket, review brake system, new ashtray, new sun visors, new pedal rubbers, new exhaust system (complete), new chrome emblems, new accelerator cable, new interior door panels, new rubbers on windshield and windows, respray engine bay, new clock and speedometer, restore spare wheel, new 3-point seatbelts and a new clutch cable.
There is no doubt the restoration works carried out by Auto Storica have been to a very high standard, but unfortunately upon arrival in the UK after purchasing the car from the owner, test driving the car revealed that the clutch release bearing was very noisy and it was also jumping out of gear, so we have just had the gearbox rebuilt and a new clutch fitted by Alfa Romeo specialist Auto Stilo in Park Royal, London NW10 and they have also MOT'd the car for us.
This really is a wonderful car in excellent condition throughout and must be seen and driven to be fully appreciated. As the car was previously registered in Spain, it will be able to go back to Europe with no duty/vat to be paid.
The car has just been registered by the DVLA and has been allocated the age-related registration number DVG 821G which have now been fitted on the car.
Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package, pre sales Service, HPI/ provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
This car is of course road tax free and ULEZ exempt.
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
