  • Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'Pagoda' Sports 1970 (J) Brown

    DEPOSIT TAKEN: 04/10/2014
The Mercedes-Benz W113 Roadsters were designed by Paul Bracq and were produced from 1963 to 1971. Their distinctive "Pagoda" hardtop roof designed by Bela Barenyi, gave them their contemporary nick-name.
Delivered new to its first owner in Los Angeles, California in September 1970, this beautiful 1971 Model Year 'Pagoda' - Chassis No: 11304412019789 is one of only 984 made in Tobacco Brown and one of the last few hundred to be built.
Of the 23,885 '280 SLs' produced, more than half were sold in the USA.
This car has only had 2 owners from new and comes with a box file containing all of its original Mercedes Benz paperwork including Build Record/Data Cards, Handbooks, extensive Service Records/invoices from the USA and UK, USA Registration papers and its original sets of Keys.
It was sold by the first owner to the current owner (his friend in Los Angeles) in 1985 and the mileage at the time was 134,600, although he had the Engine completely rebuilt a couple of years earlier @ 125,000 miles.
The car was completely stripped and repainted and all the Chrome was removed and re-plated in 1985 but was little used afterwards and was put it into storage in Los Angeles when he moved to the UK in 1988.
From 1985 until bringing it to the UK in 2004 it had only covered 3,000 miles and when it was registered and MOT'd in January 2005, the mileage covered from new was 137,988 and only 13,000 on the rebuilt Engine.
Since then the car has been serviced, MOT'd and maintained every year by Mercedes specialist 'TM Motors' in West Molesey, Surrey and they have also fitted new Brake Calipers, a new Starter Motor, Starter Ring Gear, a Reconditioned Auto Gearbox and new Torque Converter. It has also had a new Brown Mohair Soft Top, new Seat Belts, new Carpet set, a new Mercedes Benz Chrome Fuel cap (expensive) and new Sun Visors.
The car has now covered a total of 139,850 miles from new and is a really beautiful example that is of course completely rust free having spent the majority of its life in California and 7 years in storage in Los Angeles.
The car has lots of its original patina including its lovely Cognac leather Seats, dash fittings and wood trimming, period 'Becker' Stereo, Air Conditioning (that works), a new Brown mohair Soft Top, body coloured Hard Top, Power Steering, rebuilt 2799cc Fi Engine, 4 Speed Automatic Transmission, perfect Chrome-work, period number plates and its original Steel Wheels with full-face Chrome trims and relatively new Tyres.
This is a totally rust-free car is in superb condition and it has just been repainted to a high standard. It is one of the best 280 SL's that we have driven for a number of years and it will come with our own customer care package including 12 months MOT, HPI/provenance Checks, 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
These cars are rapidly increasing in value, so this is an opportunity not to be missed!
