Fiat 500D ‘Trasformabile’ Classic / 1963 / LHD – ASI Gold Plaque / Sympathetically Restored & Exceptional! £15,495
This highly desirable & original ‘D’ model (the most sort after & collectable model in the classic Nuova 500 range) has the very rare ‘suicide doors’, a full length convertible sunshine roof - ‘trasformabile’, ‘round speedo’ & been tuned to give the same performance as a later Fiat 500 ‘F’ 499cc motor making it a pleasure to drive in modern traffic conditions - In fact it has it all!
It’s an original LHD Italian example built on 12th March 1963 & originating from the beautiful town of Belluno in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Located about 100 Kilometres north of Venice.
This truly exceptional & original matching numbers example has only had 3 owners from new & was manufactured in 1963 at the Fiat factory. It stayed in Northern Italy were it was held in a private collection along with several tractors & 73 other classic Italian cars & motorbikes by the Italian owner who sadly passed away earlier this year. He had owned the car for around 27 years.
We were fortunate enough to be able to purchase this unique & original example from the owner’s son, it took us a long time to acquire this stunning car, but it was well worth the wait!
The car came to us in its totally original factory state, showing the correct amount of patina for the year. The car was used on a regular basis by the owner as it was one of his favourite fun cars for club events & shows. It still wears the decals from these events! It is also a well know ACI club car & comes with the gold ACI plaque mounted to the rear engine bay lid.
We took copious pictures of the vehicle in Italy at the owner’s home, whilst situated with his other classis in his large dry barn.
Amusingly when we transported it to our workshop, it arrived on a transporter with a couple of Ferraris & other assorted Italian cars, including a period tractor!
This little chap arrived in its totally factory original state & in unmolested condition, having never been restored, with all original panels & only a bare metal, glass out repaint in 2011 completed to a very high standard in the original colour along with an engine rebuild conducted the same year & a larger exhaust added along with a tuned carb. It even still has the factory tape in the front boot void against the inner bulkhead! One for the Fiat purists here!
Having only covered a genuine 48,650 miles from new, we were minded to maintain the originality of this example without over restoring it. The structure, floors & shell were found to be in excellent shape once up on our ramps. The owner had sprayed wax oil in the cavities & shuts ect which had preserved the original metal.
Since being in our possession, we have been meticulous in our further preparation prior to offering this exception example to the market by undertaking the following sympathetic works to enhance the vehicle, without loosing the originality, (which was the reason we wanted this unique example in the first place):
We removed the original engine & painted the engine bay along with a comprehensive strip down & test of the engine & component’s which were found to be again as new & thus were painted to factory specifications & reassembled with new gaskets & seals along with a full & thorough service. We also removed the petrol tank & gave it a complete flush prior to painting it to factory standards, we also professionally prepared & repainted the boot void as required.
On reassembling the vehicle we fitted the following quality parts: New long sunroof, sunroof hood clips & correct catches etc, new front & rear bumper sets with associated spacers & bolts etc. Centre console, 4No. alloy hub caps, new engine rubbers, grommets, seals & trims. Engine heat shield pad, number plate holder, engine lid stay back rubber, jack rubbers, spare wheel strap, front boot mat, dash knee roll trim set, water bottle bag, chrome effect windscreen wiper blades, adjusted the steering geometry, new premium Varta battery, supplied a fresh MOT and conducted a multipoint check, replaced the fuel with £25 of new super unleaded, tuned the carbs, set the timing, adjusted & cleaned the brakes & given the cheeky little chap a full service (filters, points, rotor arm, premium coil, carb kit, NGK plugs, oils, fluids etc), just to be sure! Fitted a 500 Key ring, it even has a fitted period luggage rack & period picnic hamper for 2.
We have also undersealed the vehicle with Wurth spray gun applied quality underseal to protect it going forward for the next 51 years of its life. To complete this masterpiece the vehicles paintwork was flatted back before being machine polished to perfection & fully detailed by our resident detailer.
With labour, materials & parts we have spent in excess of £3,750 on this unique vehicle (That’s not including the vehicle in the first place & transport!) & have adopted the same attitude to perfection as we take when restoring an £85k+ Pagoda. This must be without doubt the most unique, honest & best 500D’s in the country. The car is on the button & ready to go & show or just enjoy…
We will UK register it in the new owners name so they can be the first UK registered keeper if required.
This beautiful example is eminently usable as it has a fully recommissioned engine, it drives like new & as good as it looks!

The car looks factory original (excluding the sports exhaust, which we can change if required, but it does give a welcome few hp!) & is no doubt better than when it left the factory in 1964. It’s probably one of the best unmolested examples in Europe. It has been sympathetically restored by people who know the marquee, is a collector’s opportunity & a superb investment opportunity. Hence this cheeky chappy can now get UK registered, has a fresh MOT & is being offered for sale for the first time on our shores.
