This highly desirable ‘D’ model (the most sort after & collectable model in the classic Nuova 500 range is a genuine Trasformabile according to the Libretto) has the very rare ‘suicide doors’, matching numbers ‘D’ motor, new full length convertible sunshine roof - ‘trasformabile’ & ‘round speedo’ - In fact it has it all!
It’s an original LHD Trasformabile finished in one of my all-time favourite early Fiat colours of Verd Oasi, which is just so period correct & suits this charming little car down to the ground. First registered in Cosenza, a city in Calabria, in the very south of Italy. Although possibly not the most attractive of Italy’s southern cities, you can just imagine this stunning example buzzing around the city centre, in fact probably being chased by the local Mafia – Probably enough said!
Having only had 3 owners from new & first manufactured in March 1964 at the Fiat Mirafiori plant in Turin, it was first registered in Cosenza where it still resided until its epic journey to less sunny Beckenham.
Owned by the current owner Salvatore, whom is a Fiat 500 Club Italia member, & also the past chairman of the local driving club ‘Scuderia Brutia’. Indeed he has a collection of classic cars which are held in his home garage which include a Fiat 500L. F & R model, a Gardinetta & a Fiat 500 Topolino Giardiniera! Oh plus a series 3 Lancia Fulvia, which we also tried to purchase.
Indeed we have images of the little green 500D in Salvo’s home garage, so you can see some of his other classics. Naturally these images come with the vehicle.
This stunning example is ASI Gold & comes with the plaque & certificate signed by Il Presidente on 23rd January 2016.
This beautiful example came to us with the original local white on black Cosenza plates showing ‘CS 40616’. Indeed according to Salvo it has always been garage kept & underwent a professional restoration in 2010/11 to a high Italian standard. The specialist garage that conducted the works under Salvo’s watchful eye, was well known to him, club approved & has done a truly splendid job.
We are told over 6,500+ Euros had been spent on the restoration & that does not include the price of the vehicle in the first place either! It is a testament to the quality & attention to detail on what appears a no expense spared Italian restoration.
Basically everything has been reconditioned or replaced correctly as required, plus there is a photographic record of the key stages which is kept in the cars history file. So in brief: Complete strip to shell, 2 new cills, front nose & boot section were expertly fitted. The car was also rewired by the specialist & the original engine was fully rebuilt along with the gear box. Indeed there are several detailed images on file of the mechanical works including the engine rebore. The handbrake cable was changed, clutch replaced, the petrol tank was fully refurbished and flushed. The interior was also fully and expertly retimed in green piped cream along with the complete door card set & all interior trim was renewed, including the green sunroof & roof frame. All other items of interior trim were refurbished or replaced as required. The correct aluminium surrounds were machine polished, all rubber items were replaced as required. New steering components. New bushes, struts, a complete brake system replacement, rebuilt starter motor & a new exhaust & brackets, in fact every mechanical item was either refurbished or replaced.
The bumpers, brackets & over riders were replaced with Italian quality parts, the original steel wheels fully shot blasted & painted & shod with new premium tyres. The car was fully painted whilst stripped to bare shell (Inside & out) at this time in the beautiful shade of that you see today of Verde Oasi (Fiat Code 383). The cockpit, boot void & engine bay were also fully painted in the body colour. The original floors were painted in black stone chip to finish the process.
This truly impressive example is just showing just 68,118 KMs believed correct from new but only circa 1,850 KM’s since the restoration!
We saw this stunning example at a Fiat 500 club event in Cosenza over a year ago & after a long chat with Salvo left our details. We got a call a couple of months ago & began the process of negotiation to purchase. Not an easy task but a mutually acceptable deal was finally struck & the car was transported to our shores.
Since being in our possession, we have been meticulous in our further preparation prior to offering this exceptional example to the market by undertaking the following works: Repainted the wheels in the correct factory silver finish & fitted 4 new tyres, a set of new white wall spats & correct D hub caps. A new premium Varta battery & new front moustache. Fitted the correct D engine decal set, soft top hold back belt, spare tyre strap, jack straps, engine cover plate, windscreen wiper blades, premium Italian front & rear bumpers & bumper bolts, premium white heat shield pad. 2 chrome wing mirrors, adjusted the steering geometry, fitted a new speedo drive to get the speedo working accurately, supplied a fresh MOT and conducted a multipoint check, replaced the fuel with £25 of new super unleaded, tuned & cleaned the carb, set the timing. Adjusted & cleaned the brakes & given the cheeky little chap a full service (plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil etc.) just to be sure! Fitted a new boot mat & 500 Key ring along with an ACI club sticker, it even has fitted a new period luggage rack & period picnic hamper. We also conducted a full 3M paintwork rejuvenation process & a final coat of Swissvax to complete. The car is on the button & ready to go & show or just enjoy…
We have just completed this stunning vehicles first UK MOT & it is ready to UK register if required or can be exported with the Italian log book worldwide.
The history file contains the Italian log book, ASI Gold plaque, ASI certificate noting vehicles details & ASI certificate signed by Il Presidente. UK MOT & invoice from Ricambio International Ltd. The file also contains pictures of the cars restoration & inside Salvatore’s beautiful home garage.
This is one of the most honest 500D’s we have offered & better than my own example. It looks & feels period correct & well restored. As the restorer had excellent Fiat 500 knowledge & understanding of the correct parts & original detailing, this example is in an exceptional state.
The car looks pretty much ‘as new’ & is no doubt as good as when it left the factory in 1964. It has been correctly restored by people who know the marquee. This is a collector’s opportunity and a superb investment and has only driven a low number of KMS since its restoration & hence this cheeky chappy is being offered for sale for the first time on our shores.
