Fiat 500D ‘Trasformabile’ Classic / 1963 LHD Italian – Fully Restored & Exceptional Condition – Registro Italiano Gold Plaque! £17,995
This highly desirable ‘D’ model (the most sort after & collectable model in the classic Nuova 500 range) has the very rare ‘suicide doors’, a new full length convertible sunshine roof - ‘trasformabile’, ‘round speedo’ & has an upgraded 110F motor, but also comes with the matching numbers 110D motor & its Fiat Registro Italiano Gold plaque awarded - In fact it has it all!
It’s an original LHD example first registered in Padua. Padua is a city in Northern Italy’s Veneto region. It’s known for the frescoes by Giotto in its Scovegni Chapel & the vast 13th century Basilica of St Anthony. The basilica, with its Byzantine-style domes & notable artworks, contains the namesake saint’s tomb. In the beautiful Padua old town where we always stay every October for the Auto e Moto D’ Epoca event, are the arcaded streets & stylish cafes frequented by students from the University of Padua, oh & us! In fact this 2 owner stunning example has never travelled far as we purchased it in Sant’ Ambrogio, Padua which is half way between Padua old town & Treviso were it has resided all of its life until we purchased it & transported it to less sunny Beckenham.
Having only had 2 local owners from new, it was manufactured on 16th April 1963 at the Fiat Mirafiori plant in Turin.
This beautiful example is now MOT’d & can be UK registered, so it’s ready to enjoy for some summer frolics.
Owned by a very knowledgeable gentleman ‘Denis’ residing in Sant’ Ambrogio, we got a call from the local garage that did the bodywork & paint 4 years ago, due to Denis coming in for the annual MOT. The first words uttered were ‘you won’t believe how much this guy spent on this car’ which is usually a good start!
Denis decided to have his pride & joy restored as a gift to himself in 2016, when he purchased the car from its first owner & restored to concourse standard. The specialist garage that conducted the works has done a truly splendid job & there are a few pictures in the file to document the work. It was not declared by Denis how much has been spent, but we estimate with the garage, conservatively around 13,000Euros.
It appears a very high professional UK quality full restoration as even the underside is finished in the body colour & is detailed. It is a testament to the quality & attention to detail on what appears a no expense spared restoration.
On close examination it appears everything has been reconditioned or replaced correctly as required. So in brief: Complete strip to bare shell, the structure was found sound, so only new genuine front floor pans & a front panel were required. The original 110D engine was set aside & a reconditioned 110F motor installed. The original 110d motor comes with the vehicle if the owner should want it. The original gear box was converted to synco at the time including a full rebuild & the car changes gear without the usual D non synchro crunch! The vehicle was fully rewired, 5 new tyres fitted. The handbrake cable was changed, clutch replaced, the petrol tank was fully refurbished and flushed. The interior was also fully and expertly retimed in the original colours of red piped cream along with the complete door card set, new floor rubber coverings & red over mats fitted & all other items of interior trim were refurbished or replaced. The correct aluminium surrounds were machine polished, rubber items were replaced including the door seals. New bushes, struts, a complete brake system replacement, rebuilt starter motor & a new exhaust & brackets, in fact every mechanical item was either refurbished or replaced.
The bumpers & brackets were replaced, the original steel wheels fully shot blasted & painted in factory silver, the car was fully painted whilst stripped to bare shell (Inside, outside & underneath) at this time in the original beautiful shade of Fiat Azzurro Chairo - 415 Light sky blue that you see today. In fact it looks as good underneath as it does on the top - It’s just beautiful underneath, find another with an undercarriage like this & in the body colour!
This truly impressive example is just showing just 4,846 KMs since the nut & bolt restoration!
Since being in our possession, we have been meticulous in our further preparation prior to offering this exceptional example to the market by undertaking the following works: Fitted a new long grey mohair sunroof made by our associated trimmer, with hold back clips. Fixed the horn & window wiper jets. Fitted a premium Varta battery, set of white wall spats, front moustache, exhaust, 4No. hub cap bolts & washers, wiper blades, premium coil, fitted the correct D engine decal set, 2No new cream sun visors, spare tyre strap, jack straps, heat shield pad, adjusted the steering geometry. Conducted a multipoint check, replaced the fuel with £25 of new super unleaded, checked the carb & set the timing. Adjusted & cleaned the brakes & given the cheeky little chap a full service. just to be sure! Fitted an ACI club sticker, it even has fitted a period luggage rack & period picnic hamper for 4.
We have conducted a forensic full valet & done a complete 3M machine polish & full Swiss vax preparation of the external paintwork. The car is on the button & ready to go & show or just enjoy…
The original Italian Libretto accompanies the vehicle along with images of it outside the owner’s property in Padua, the original blue Italian Libretto (Log Book). Fiat Registro Italiano Gold plaque & certificate with all matching details & photograph, Italian PRA copy. Invoice from Ricambio International, a UK MOT certificate & some restoration images accompany the vehicle.
This is one of the most honest & correctly restored 500D’s we have offered & better than my own example. It looks & feels period correct & well restored. As the restorer had excellent Fiat 500 knowledge & understanding of the correct parts & original detailing, this time warp example is in an exceptional state.
The car looks pretty much ‘as new’ & is no doubt better than when it left the factory in 1963. It has been correctly restored by people who know the marquee. This is a collector’s opportunity and a superb investment and has only driven a low number of KMS since its restoration & hence this cheeky chappy is being offered for sale on our shores.
